Friday, April 25, 2025- A new chapter is beginning in Sequoyah County as plans move forward for a $2.5 million courthouse annex building, set to rise on the site of the former Agent Funeral Home in downtown Sallisaw.
The announcement came during the Sallisaw Chamber of Commerce’s monthly membership meeting on Wednesday, where District 3 County Commissioner Jim Rogers and County Clerk Julie Haywood served as keynote speakers.
Commissioner Rogers, who has served in his role for 14 years, shared details about the 10,000-square-foot annex, which is being designed to house offices for the county commissioners, county clerk, county assessor, and county treasurer.
While construction has not yet begun, Rogers noted that the architectural design is nearing completion, and the project is expected to move forward soon.
Rogers emphasized that the new building will be funded entirely by American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, with no additional burden on local taxpayers.

County Clerk Julie Haywood, who has served for 12 years, also provided updates on her department’s recent activity. She shared that her staff has been working diligently to preserve historical records, which will be safely stored underground, and that new plat cabinets have been acquired to improve organization and accessibility.
In addition, Haywood reported that her office has processed approximately 5,000 purchase orders to date this year, with nearly $8 million spent on goods and services. She also expressed that gross wages paid in 2024 totaled around $6.4 million, marking a significant rise from the previous year.
In terms of countywide distributions, tax receipts from 2024 provided county schools $13 million, with an additional $2.3 million allocated to the district's Vo-Tech and about $460,000 to the district library system.
