The Sequoyah County Board of Commissioners officially declared January as Human Trafficking and Stalking Awareness Month during their weekly meeting on Monday.
Sequoyah County Investigator Cindy Smith presented the proclamations, which aim to raise awareness of these critical issues.
“I want the public to know that these situations don’t always occur as you see in the movies and big cities. It happens in rural areas too; however, it looks different for small, rural communities,” Smith explained.
The commissioners unanimously approved and signed the proclamations, expressing gratitude to Smith and her team for their dedication and efforts to combat human trafficking and stalking throughout Sequoyah County and surrounding areas.
By declaring January as Human Trafficking and Stalking Awareness Month, the county, Smith, and her team aim to educate residents and encourage their involvement in addressing these issues.
For more information on how to identify and report human trafficking or stalking, or to learn about community resources, residents are encouraged to contact local law enforcement or visit the National Human Trafficking Hotline website.
