Wednesday, May 3, 2023 - A Sallisaw man who was caught at a safety checkpoint at the intersection of Dogwood Street and East Delaware Avenue on April 20 has been charged with driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
Monte Eugene Elliott, 50, could face up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $1,000 if he is convicted.
On April 20, three Sallisaw police officers were conducting a safety checkpoint when a dark-colored pickup traveling east sped through it without stopping.
A chase ensued and the pickup driven by Elliott finally turned into the driveway of a residence on Dogwood St.
While speaking to Elliott, officers reportedly could smell alcohol on his breath.
Officers then had Elliott perform several field-sobriety tests, which he failed. Police also noticed Elliott’s slurred speech and he was unsteady on his feet.
According to the police report, Elliott became aggressive and officers had to force him to comply with his arrest.
