Friday, September 8, 2023 - The administration of Sallisaw Public Schools has released an official statement in regard to an incident that occurred at Sallisaw Middle School on Thursday, September 7. The statement in its entirety appears below.

First and foremost, the safety and well-being of our students and staff is our number one priority at Sallisaw Public Schools. This release pertains to an incident that occurred on the afternoon of September 7th, 2023 at Sallisaw Middle School involving a BB-Gun. In an effort to combat misinformation, we felt it was necessary to clarify some details. At no time during this incident was a firearm present at the school. Immediately upon being notified of a possible threat, administrative staff and the School Resource Officer confiscated the item and followed school discipline and law enforcement protocols. Upon the confiscation of the BB-Gun, no active threat existed to the students or staff of the school. The item in question was verified by law enforcement to be a BB-Gun. As with any threat, we assess the risks to students and staff at all times. Sallisaw Public Schools will always be as transparent as Federal Law provides, as the privacy of all students involved in disciplinary situations is protected. Parents have a right to know certain information, but the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) must be adhered to with strict compliance. As a district, we are always analyzing our internal protocols to ensure any possible threat to our students and staff is eliminated immediately and we will continue to provide extensive training and continuing education to our district employees as it pertains to school safety. As schools face more and more safety risk each day, we encourage parents, guardians, and students to continue to be active in communicating any situation that they feel might be a risk or threat to Sallisaw Public Schools. We will continue working in conjunction with law enforcement and mental health experts to provide the safest and best learning environment possible.
