Monday, December 18, 2023 - On Wednesday, the Sequoyah County Boys and Girls Club was awarded as the December member of the month at the Sallisaw Chamber of Commerce monthly membership meeting. The meeting was held at noon at the First United Methodist Church in Sallisaw.
In 1995, Linda Bickel was operating a program with the Christian Children’s Fund to connect low-income youth in the area with sponsors around the globe to provide tutoring for youth.
The Boys and Girls Club of America approached Bickel because they admired the tutoring program she was managing. This was just the beginning of the Boys and Girls Club of Sequoyah County.
Three years later, the Sequoyah County Boys and Girls Club was chartered on December 31, 1998. In 1999, the club established its first unit, which was located at the old post office downtown. The organization has expanded to six units, with five of the units housed in rural elementary schools across the county.
Club sites now include Brushy, Moffett, Roland, Vian, and Liberty-Sallisaw school campuses, plus a stand-alone or main Sallisaw campus.
This month marks the 25th anniversary of the club, whose mission is to “enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens.”
Programs provided by the Sequoyah County Boys and Girls Club are not only affordable but also educational. Programs offered include STEM activities, Career Launch, diabetes prevention, anti bullying and anti-drug activities, fun and fitness, and a host of other programs aimed at helping youth be the best they can be.
