Wednesday, June 28, 2023 - Sequoyah County Undersheriff Charles House provided a sheriff's update to the Sequoyah County Board of Commissioners during this week's regular meeting.
House said, "In the past six months, around 1100 people have been booked into the county jail. As far as reports taken by deputies throughout the county in the past six months, the number is close to 773. The numbers we are seeing are slightly higher than the previous year."
During the citizen presentation portion of the meeting, Sequoyah County Sheriff Larry Lane stated, "We had another fentanyl overdose death this weekend. It seems like we are starting to see around two to three of these each week here lately."
In addition to the law enforcement updates, Sequoyah County Emergency Management deputy director Jonathan Teague reported that this week promises uncomfortable temperatures with heat indexes close to 115 to 120 degrees.
In new business, the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office received approval to apply for a Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) grant. Several annual renewals were also approved during this week’s meeting.
