Sequoyah County residents are invited to attend a town hall meeting hosted by County Commissioner Jim Rogers on Tuesday, January 21, at 6 p.m. at the Sequoyah County Fairgrounds.
The meeting aims to provide information about the proposed tourism/lodging tax, scheduled for a vote on February 11, and its potential benefits for the community.
If the vote is approved, a 4% lodging tax will apply to overnight stays in Airbnb rentals, hotels, and motels in Sequoyah County. County residents will not be taxed unless they rent lodging locally, and overnight visitors will bear the cost.
The funds accumulated by the tax would be divided into 3 categories. 60% would support the maintenance and operations of the 20-year-old Sequoyah County Fairgrounds, which has operated solely on donations until now. 30% would be used to promote tourism, attracting more visitors and economic opportunities to the area and 10% would fund trash cleanup efforts throughout the county to improve community beautification.
This meeting is an opportunity for county residents to gain a better understanding of the potential benefits of the proposed tax and participate in open discussion to make informed decisions before the February 11 vote. Your voice matters
